ACCREDITATION

 Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has been granted NABH accreditation. Amrita is the first university teaching hospital to get NABH accreditation in the country.National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) is a constituent board of quality council of India set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organizations and to set benchmarks for progress of health industry.

International Organization for Standardization(ISO) has accredited Amrita Health sciences campus at Kochi with ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 & OHSAS 18001:2007

HISTORY

In the twenty-two years since its inception, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Amrita Hospital) has grown from a 115 bed specialty hospital to a 1100-bed (490 units) bed super-specialty tertiary care health centre with an attached medical college hospital. On the 17th of May 1998, Amrita Hospital was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.

AMMA’s vision of providing advanced medical care to the poor and disadvantaged was the inspiration for Amrita Hospital, which today is a 1100-bed (490 units) tertiary referral and teaching hospital, serving more than 10 lakh outpatients and more than 70,000 inpatients annually. The massive healthcare infrastructure with over 3.33 million sq.ft. of built-up area, spread over 125 acres of land, supports a daily patient volume of approximately 3500 outpatients with 95 percent inpatient occupancy. There are 12 superspeciality departments, 45 other departments, 4500 support staff and 670 faculty members.

SERVICES

The hospital’s extensive infrastructure offers facilities comprising 28 modern operating theatres, 275 equipped intensive-care beds, a fully computerized and networked Hospital Information System (HIS), a fully digital radiology department, 17 NABL accredited clinical laboratories and 24/7 telemedicine service.

The Amrita Hospital team comprises physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals of the highest caliber and experience. Amrita Hospital features one of the most advanced hospital computer networks in India. It owns a fully integrated health care delivery system. Another unique feature is the teleconnectivity, which connects sixty Centres in India and nine international centers. A PET (Positron Emitting Tomography) CT scanner, the first of its kind in the state of Kerala and which is extremely useful for early detection of cancer, has been installed in Amrita Hospital and was inaugurated in July 2009 by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India

Amrita features one of the most advanced hospital computer networks in India. The network supports more than 2800 computers and has computerised nearly every aspect of patient care including all patient information, lab testing and radiological imaging.

AWARDS/RECOGNITION

In 2015, South Asia’s first ever Bilateral Hand Transplant Surgery was done at Amrita Hospital. The same year, Amrita Hospital won the British Medical Journal Award for the Best Surgical Team in South Asia. The Amrita team won the award for its two successful double hand transplants, the first and the second bilateral hand transplants in this region. Previously, the hospital had won the National Healthcare Excellence Award for Best Hospital (CSR Category) in India by FICCI in 2013 and British Medical Journal (BMJ) – India Healthcare Award for the Pediatric Heart Program in 2014. In 2016, Amrita Hospital won the coveted British Medical Journal Award for Infectious Disease Initiative of the Year and FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards for Patient Safety and Innovation in Medical Technology.
