Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati


Sri   Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSDN) is a premier eye care institution of North-East India located in Guwahati, Assam functioning since 1994 and was dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister of India, Sri P.V. Narasimha Rao in 1995. North-East India is rich in culture & natural resources but the region is underdeveloped in terms of economy & healthcare. Due to non-availability of professional & specialty eye-care services in the state & around the region, it was the aim to establish a centre of excellence of international standards catering to a large patient pool with eye diseases and to create an eye care facility for medical education, advanced training & research.

The foundation comprises of patient centric approach based on the six domains of health care quality (safe, effective, patient-centred, timely, efficient, equitable) put forth by IOM, and focuses on training internal & external candidates, intra & extra mural research, clinic related or non clinical support service including biomedical engineering, general maintenance and public relation. 

SSDN is registered with Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and is also NABH accredited. SSDN has a well-equipped in-house laboratory which is NABL accredited.

  • Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Ophthalmology (Optometry and Paramedical Sciences), (SSNIO)
  • Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Institute of Community Ophthalmology (SSNICO)

SSDN provides all essential ophthalmic services & functions as a Centre of Excellence in the field of:

  • State of the Art Eye Care (All Specialties and Community service)
  • Training Eye Care Professionals.
  • Training for different Paramedical programmes (Govt. and Non Govt. Programme)
  • Medical and Paramedical Education
  • Research for Evidence support, Guidance, shared learning, demonstration of valued result and governance as Centre of Excellence.

SSDN has adopted cluster of 900 villages and has been responsible for 200 blindness free villages.
